Alfama getting ready for Santo António.

Unfortunately for the Lisboetas, their main saint Santo António is best known as “Saint Anthony of Padua”.  Padua, isn´t that in Italy? Right. That´s where he died, hence his nickname. Still, the holy man was born in Lisbon in 1195, and one of his amazing talents was to be simultaneously at 2 places. Apart from that, he´s venerated all over the world as the patron saint for lost articles, and is credited with many miracles involving lost people and things. His death on June 13, 1231 is a holiday in Portugal. Lisbon, and mainly Alfama, celebrates Santo António with lots of beer and grilled sardines. Officially only on the 13th, but look at how Alfama is getting ready for an entire month of partying…
